The Coaching Cubes for Emotional Intelligence

Inside the box is a set of 9 cubes with 42 different icons, 6 emotion words, and 6 questions. The framework is inspired by the following models or studies: Circumplex of Emotions, Basic Emotions, Emotional Intelligence, and Nonviolent Communication.

The cubes show the connection between emotions, body sensations, thoughts, and needs. By knowing what drives certain emotional experiences, we can be better at naming and understanding them for ourselves and for those around us.

Storytelling on Emotions in Two Ways

Option 1: The COE approach for coaching & therapy

Encourage your client to name and understand their emotions based on Mood (pleasant or unpleasant) and Energy (activation or deactivation). The framework is inspired by James Russell's Circumplex of Emotions model.

Option 2: The Basic Emotions approach for self-reflection

For a simpler approach, you can replace the Mood and Energy cubes with the Basic Emotions cube. This cube features the six basic emotions, perfect for personal reflection and building emotional intelligence.

You can go for this option if you are new to Emotional Intelligence and want to get started. You don't need to refer to the COE model for this one.

1

Roll the Basic Emotions cube.

2

Choose between the Pleasant and Unpleasant cubes depending on the emotion.

3

Remove the Mood and Energy cubes. We'll use that for the first approach.

4

Roll the rest of the cubes together: Body Sensations, Thoughts, and Needs cubes.

5

Optionally, you can add the Questions cube to dig deeper into storytelling.

Encourage storytelling in groups

Have fun with storytelling!

Use the Coaching Cubes for Emotional Intelligence to start deep sharing and conversation with your family and friends.

Option 1: Create a story

Use either of the storytelling options (COE and Basic Emotions), roll necessary cubes, and tell fiction stories. You can continue the story plot until it reaches the last person in the group. This approach allows everyone to tap into their creative self and make use of their imagination.

Option 2: Express yourself

Use either of the storytelling options (COE and Basic Emotions), roll necessary cubes, and tell a story about a specific life experience. Expound on what emotions are present during that time and reflect on why you reacted a certain way.
