What do a set of inkblots, a deck of coaching cards, and a wall in New Orleans have in common?

In this short video, we take you through the quiet power of prompts — and how images and symbols can unlock things people didn’t know they were ready to share.

What you’ll see:
• Where the idea of visual prompts came from
• Why people respond to abstract cues more honestly
• How these tools show up in coaching, group work, and online sessions

Why prompts work better than advice?

When someone sees a card and says..

“That’s how I feel..”

Something shifts. Pictures don’t force answers — they invite reflection. They turn silence into dialogue, and hesitation into stories.

I got myself a set of Deep Pictures for the 30th edition of BEST’s Trainer Camp, on which a new generation of soft-skill trainers was raised. Over 12 days, we were able to use the cards in all sorts of situations, be it in training sessions for reflecting upon experiences, for retrospectives at the end of each day or for stimulating thoughts during individual coaching. The highlight for our participants was, of course, that at the end of the event everyone could take home a card with the personal greetings of the remaining participants.

In systemic counseling, great emphasis is placed on action and doing – the client does not 'lie on the couch' and put their innermost thoughts into words. Instead, the goal is to use vivid methods to explore problems and subconscious inner images from a fresh perspective. The expressive image cards from metaFox offer many possibilities for this approach.

I use the cards to gather participants' associations with the seminar topic.I've noticed time and again that the images encourage participants to express themselves much more concretely about the subject matter.Academics, in particular, tend to hide behind jargon or abstract language when talking about themselves or their emotions.By working with images, we bring their thoughts down to earth and create a space for honest, straightforward conversations.

This replay features key moments from our 90-minute session, “Facilitation with the Power of Pictures” — a collaborative webinar with SessionLab focused on how coaches and facilitators can use picture cards to spark deeper, more honest conversations.

You’ll see the main presentation, where we explored why visuals often succeed where words fall short — especially when trying to create openness in group settings. The session highlights how image-based prompts invite reflection without pressure, helping people speak from the inside out.

It also includes a powerful participant reflection segment, where attendees shared what it felt like to use picture cards live — what surprised them, what shifted, and what they’d take into their next facilitation.

If you’re curious about how visual prompts can move a room, this is the part of the session you don’t want to miss.
