Values are drivers of behavior. They are the motivations behind our actions. However, some values we hold are not reflected in our daily life. We can correct and be more intentional with our everyday actions. We can jumpstart this by first, identifying what matters most to us and, then, prioritizing which values we want to live by.
Objectives
Identify what matters most to the client – their values.
Prioritize the values the client wants to motivate their daily actions.
Allow the client to choose which actions to take and provide them with the support they need.
Preparation and Resources
coaching cards set “What Really Matters!”
icebreaker.online for online sessions
Writing materials (pens, pencils, paper, post-its)
Facilitation
Reflect on your everyday actions last week
Ask your client to think about their actions in the previous 7 days. Have them focus on behavior that has a significant impact on their days. Ask them to write down these actions on post-its or small pieces of paper.-
Match each action with a value
Spread the values cards in front of your client. Ask them to match each action they've listed with the value that motivated them to do it.When using the metaFox “What Really Matters!” values cards, point to the value definition at the back of the card as a guide whenever your client is unsure or unclear about the values.
-
Sort the value/action pairs from most to least important
Have your client arrange the pairs from what matters most to what matters least to them. Ask them if other values are not present on their pairs that are important to them.Optionally, use the Values Grid on the previous page as a tool for sorting or to search for other desired values. Match the color on the back of the “What Really Matters” cards with the Values Grid.
Choose which values to live by for next week(s)
Ask your client to prioritize 3 values they want to reflect in their actions in the upcoming week(s). Have them write the specific behaviors they can commit to that reflect the 3 values.Encourage accountability
Give options for accountability like journaling, having an accountability partner, or sharing in your next coaching session.
