a client struggling to get details out

Detail Insertion

If you are already working with a picture with your client, you might realize that there are missing elements which should be in the picture but are not. Rarely do we discuss what is not in the picture, what is missing and add exactly this to it. This is a chance to project meaning towards the picture and for the client to own it. With this method you let the client draw and sketch on the picture itself to illustrate the projected meaning.

Precondition:
With your client you are already working with at least one picture. You hear that your client is describing many important aspects which are not represented in the picture and you want to follow this impulse.

Objectives

  • Understanding the picture itself and exploring its meaning.

  • Adding to the meaning offered in the picture through creative efforts.

  • Partly destructive commitment to not only find but create meaning. After all, the picture is changed in a non-reversible way.

Preparation and Resources

  • A picture

  • Art materials such as crayons, colored markers, or other creative drawing materials

Facilitation

  1. You are already working with an image with your client and have explored it in detail, yet one or many elements are missing, i.e. the client talks about these elements figuratively or literally but they do not have a visual representation.

  2. Instruct your client to alter the picture creatively by supplying pens or other creative materials.

  3. Let the client add all elements to the picture which he sees fit. Ask about the different aspects that he mentioned and how they would be represented.

  4. In the following discussion about the picture, ask about its composition. Why are certain elements in precisely this spot? Why are some closer together and others far away? Which relationships between elements are clearly shown? Which are hidden?

  5. Following this method, your client should have a much better understanding of how he creates meaning in the picture. Let him keep the picture as a reminder for his worldview.
