The First Session: Understanding a Participant's Goals

Knowing where the client wants to go is critical for every coaching session, especially for a Coach and participants’ first session together. It is necessary to get a grasp of the future that the participants want for themself and only with a clear understanding of it, can a Coach pave the way and build this future together with them.

This method focuses on understanding the client’s goals. Tailored for virtual meetings, this can also be adapted for on-site sessions using physical metaFox deep pictures card sets that combine 52 evocative picture cards in one postcard set.

Objectives

  • Get a sense of the client and their goals.

Preparation and Resources

Facilitation

1. Define the future.
Present your client with the card set “Design Your Life” with the question:
“What do you see when you envision your ideal future?”

  • Let the client choose as many cards as he/she wants

  • Let the client share why he/she chose the respective picture cards and how it answers the question.

  • Ask the follow-up questions:

    • “What does success mean to you in the context of your future?”

    • “How do the different images connect? What is the story they tell?”

    • “What is standing in your way?”

2. Explore opportunities.
Explore further by asking, “What opportunities or resources might help you achieve your vision?” or “What would help you?”.

3. Explore feelings.
With the card set “World of Emotions,” ask the questions:

  • “When thinking about your future, what do you feel?”

  • “How about if nothing changes?”
(Upon setting up the icebreaker session, make sure to allow the client to choose 2 picture cards, one for each question.) Let the client share their picture cards.
