Bringing Workshops Outdoors: Nature as a partner in Coaching

Walkaboutyou uniquely merges nature-based experiential learning with leadership and team development. Its programs draw on Otto Scharmer’s Theory U, mindfulness, and the Inner Development Goals (IDGs). With formats ranging from off-site retreats to reflective walking sessions, WalkaboutYou offers a grounded and structured alternative to indoor coaching.
A Natural Rhythm for Team Renewal

A Natural Rhythm for Team Renewal

A midsize German insurer embarked on a year-long journey to rebuild trust and cohesion across one of its internal teams. The process unfolded not in conference rooms, but along wooded paths and river trails.

It began with a summer offsite in Köln’s Stadtwald—a full day immersed in nature, walking and working beneath the canopy of trees. Months later, a half-day session in Rheinpark offered a gentle seasonal transition. Leaves underfoot, the team explored deeper layers of collaboration through reflective dialogue and shared presence.

To anchor the experience, a blended indoor/outdoor session at company headquarters rounded out the cycle. Between each gathering, online coaching and pulse surveys kept the momentum steady.

The outcome wasn’t just insight—it was rhythm.

“Our second outdoor workshop … allowed us to pause—not just catch our breath, but recalibrate and cultivate connection.”

This structured yet organic arc gave the team a space to slow down, reorient, and return to their daily work with a clearer sense of mutual focus and trust.

Many coaching formats are overly cognitive and disconnected from embodied insight. Walkaboutyou address this by using nature and movement to foster clarity, connection, and personal alignment—creating space for reflection that feels organic, not forced.

Try This: Ground and Connect

Try This: Ground and Connect

Step 1: Pair Up and Pick a Card

Form pairs in your group. Give each pair a question card. You can hand them out randomly or let them choose one that feels right.

Step 2: Go for a Walk

Ask each pair to walk together and talk about the question on their card. Encourage them to go with the flow—no pressure to answer perfectly. Just let the question guide the conversation.

Step 3: Optional Silent Start (2–5 mins)

Invite them to begin the walk in silence. This gives space for the question to settle in before the conversation starts.

Step 4: Debrief Together (Optional)

When everyone returns, ask participants to share what stood out in their conversation. Or simply ask:

  • “What did the question open up for you?”
  • “What was surprising or meaningful?”

Why it works

A short walk helps people open up. When paired with a strong question, it creates space for honesty, connection, and insight—perfect for coaching, training, or team workshops.
